Teaching High School Students

Raging hormones and a strong desire for back of the class naps. How does one teach high school kids about breast cancer?

My wife Imelda, who is my partner and counsels our patients about genetic cancer risk, and I had the opportunity to teach several students at Knoxville Catholic High School all about breast cancer. I taught these eager young minds about the science of breast cancer while Imelda taught them about the genetics of breast cancer. She covered topics such as who benefits from genetic testing, higher surveillance measures for increased familial risk and what lifestyle changes can be made to reduce that risk.

Birthday_candles

Today, we are celebrating one hundred years of the American Cancer Society, a society created for the sole purpose of bringing public awareness to the scourge of cancer. One hundred years later, the American Cancer Society has helped to save over 14,000,000 lives, has galvanized millions of Americans to fight cancer and has spent over $3.6 Billion dollars on research. 47 scientists, whose careers and research have been funded in part by the American Cancer Society have won Nobel Prizes.  Many of us, myself included, are able to be here today because of the dedication and hard work by the people who make up the American Cancer Society.

Targeted Therapies for Breast Cancer: The SIlver Bullet

Silver Bullet

The Silver Bullet, and not the one the Lone Ranger carried, is a drug that goes specifically and only to a breast cancer cell to kill it. We have had some not so perfect silver bullets in the past, but newer target therapies are turning out to act like silver bullets should. But first, a review.

Cancer cells exhibit uncontrolled growth in that they grow anywhere and everywhere. Imagine you are baking a cake and you pour the batter into a pan to shape the cake. After baking, you expect a cake in the shape of your pan. But now imagine that the cake grew right through the pan, that is, the cake did not respect the walls of your pan but grew right through the pan and into the walls of the oven. This is what cancer does.

Mammograms save lives. As a Breast Surgical Oncologist, together with the Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center, we strive to ensure that every woman who needs a mammogram can have access to one. We work with the county health departments, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program and charities to assist women who need mammograms. At KCBC we have partnered with the Rowden family to establish and fund the Kim Rowden Breast Cancer Memorial Fund in order to provide breast cancer screening and treatment for women without financial resources.

Community LiaisonLiaison.

That is some fancy word. Probably French. Webster’s defines liaison as: an illicit sexual relationship. Most definitely a French word. But liason also means, “one that establishes and maintains communication for mutual understanding and cooperation.”

Arrgh, I am your Captain and Lisa is yer First Mate. Climb aboard. The seas will be rough though the sun will shine. These distant shores may be far away, but, as your Captain, my crew and I will be with you every step of the way.
