Hidden Scar surgery is an advanced approach to removing breast cancer that greatly minimizes the visibility of the scar. While our goal with breast cancer surgery is to remove all of the cancer, we also care about how the cosmetic outcome affects you. Some women view their scars as symbols of their strength and bravery through their journey with cancer, but many others see their scars as reminders of a scary and difficult time.
For some women, breast cancer surgery scars significantly impact their self-confidence, intimacy, and body image after surgery. In fact, 87% of women are self-conscious due to scars from breast cancer surgery and 82% of women have not worn a certain piece of clothing because it reveals her breast cancer surgery scars.
For these reasons, Dr. Margulies has been extensively trained as a Hidden Scar Breast Cancer Surgeon to ensure that you have the best surgical outcome if you’re a candidate for the procedure. You may qualify for Hidden Scar surgery based on the size and location of your tumor, and your breast shape and size in relation to the tumor. The Hidden Scar approach can be performed for both a nipple sparing mastectomy or a lumpectomy.
Hidden Scar Lumpectomy
For a Hidden Scar Lumpectomy, you may be a candidate if the size of the tumor is small enough relative to the size of your breast, and if the cancer has not spread to other areas of the breast. The incision will be made in a place that is hard to see, and there are three different locations for the incision that make the scar less visible:
- The natural crease beneath the breast
- Along the edges of the areola
- In the armpit, usually hidden in a natural fold
Nipple Sparing Mastectomy
With a Nipple Sparing Mastectomy and reconstructive implants, the incision is made in the natural crease beneath your breast. Nearly all the breast tissue is removed while the outside of your nipple is left in place. The breast is then reconstructed with an implant so that the breast will hide the surgical scar. If you’re considering reconstruction, you might be glad to know that implants are softer and more supple than they were in the past. Your breast should look more natural with your nipple intact and the scar not as visible as traditional surgery techniques.
Patients who undergo the Hidden Scar approach do not have a higher risk of cancer recurrence than patients who undergo any other type of technique. Hidden Scar surgeries are more time-consuming, but the benefits are worth it if a scar can be made less conspicuous and you won’t have as obvious of a reminder about your cancer.
