How You Can Help Candidates Like Me In The ‘Real Men Wear Pink’ Campaign

Posted by Dr. Aaron G. Margulies - September 5, 2019 - Knoxville Community, Cancer Survival

Imelda & me at Knoxville’s Real Men Wear Pink launch event on 8/27/19.

Once again, I’m proud to be part of the ‘Real Men Wear Pink’ campaign, which is a movement and a fundraiser that’s very dear to our hearts. Every dollar raised helps the American Cancer Society save lives, and I’m one of several local men striving to raise awareness and make a difference in East Tennessee and beyond.

The campaign rallies supporters with fundraising efforts throughout the month of September and early October, and culminates in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer annual walk on Sunday, Oct. 13, at World’s Fair Park.

Our ultimate mission is to end breast cancer, and I could use your help in making  Knoxville’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign meet our goal of raising $65,000.

Participants and supporters of the national Real Men Wear Pink campaign have had a substantial impact in supporting breast cancer patients and survivors, including:

  • Almost $8.5 million raised since 2005 for Road To Recovery® and other transportation programs that provide free rides to treatments.
  • Over $1.5 million raised for Reach To Recovery®, providing patients with one-on-one support from fellow breast cancer survivors since the program began in 1969.
  • Nearly 452,000 free nights of lodging provided for to patients in 2017 through Hope Lodge®.
  • More than 40,000 patient navigators helped patients understand their diagnosis and how to tackle day-to-day issues in 2017.
  • Contributed to a 26% decline in cancer death rates, translating to nearly 2.4 million lives saved from cancer since 1991.

Knoxville’s Real Men Wear Pink candidates commit to:

—Wearing pink throughout October

—Raising awareness for the cause through their social media networks

—Raising a minimum of $2,500 to help the American Cancer Society fight breast cancer

We know we can make a difference in reducing the incidences of breast cancer. Every dollar raised helps the American Cancer Society save lives from breast cancer through early detection and prevention, risk reduction, innovative breast cancer research, and numerous patient support services.

How To Help The Local ‘Real Men Wear Pink’ Campaign

Real Men Wear Pink of Knoxville has a goal to raise $65,000, and you can help me be part of that goal. Our local Real Men Wear Pink candidates raise funds for the Knoxville chapter of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer annual walk on Sunday, October 13, at World’s Fair Park, but anyone can contribute whether you take part in the walk or not.

Here are some options for how to help the Real Men Wear Pink campaign support anyone affected by breast cancer, which just may include someone you love:

  • Donate $35, $50, $80, $100, or any amount to support me or the other Real Men In Pink leaders of Knoxville as we strive to make a huge impact on the mission to end breast cancer.
  • On Sunday, October 13, support and participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Knoxville walk on at 12 pm, World’s Fair Park.
  • Follow and share the Real Men Wear Pink of Knoxville’s Facebook page.
  • Men in the community who would like to also be recognized as “Real Men” supporters can learn more by contacting Lea Bradley at lea.bradley@cancer.org or call 865-558-4056.

Each and every step along the long history of breast cancer proves that one doctor can make a difference, one person who lends a hand can make a difference, and anyone who supports efforts like Real Men Wear Pink most certainly makes a difference.

Please join me and my “Pink” friends as we raise money for the American Cancer Society.

One person at a time, we can make a difference together.
