Imelda & me at Knoxville’s Real Men Wear Pink launch event on 8/27/19.

Once again, I’m proud to be part of the ‘Real Men Wear Pink’ campaign, which is a movement and a fundraiser that’s very dear to our hearts. Every dollar raised helps the American Cancer Society save lives, and I’m one of several local men striving to raise awareness and make a difference in East Tennessee and beyond.

I’ve Beaten Breast Cancer. Now What?

I've Beaten Breast Cancer. Now What?Josephine took her last dose of radiation therapy, got dressed, and walked down the hallway. The staff and other cancer survivors were waiting for her. She strode towards them, feeling like a Cheshire Cat with a smile a mile wide. She enjoyed every step. She enjoyed every congratulation. She enjoyed every good cheer. She grabbed the hammer and rung the bell. She was done. Her journey to beat breast cancer was complete.

Fighting breast cancer takes a lot of energy and determination. Many days just wipe you out and some days you just cry. At the end of the journey, the air is fresh, the sky is blue and the sun is brighter than it ever was.

Real Men Wear Pink

image-2October’s colors warm the heart like no other. As the greens of summer fade to reds and yellows, the air becomes crisp, heralding the coming months of reflection and renewal. October puts to rest the hard work of summer and initiates the inward searching of winter. We clean our lawns, wipe down our decks and gather wood for the fire. We are preparing to say thanks for the past year and to appreciate the many blessings in our lives.

In October, we listen to Moses delivering his final sermon to the Israelites as he prepares to climb Mt. Nebo and return home to God. The final chapters of Torah are read, and we can see Moses disappear up the mountain. We then turn to the beginning and recite the story of creation.

I have breast cancer. What about my ovaries?

child-1245893_1920Jane is a 36-year-old mother of three just trying to make it through the day. She has children in three different schools, and the constant driving was taking a toll on her. One day, while putting on her seat belt, her left breast hurt. She thought nothing of it as she drove around town from school to ballet to soccer and to the grocery store. Then, one morning, in the shower, she noticed a lump in her breast. No one in her family, not her mother, not her sisters, not her aunts, had breast cancer. Still, she was scared. She called her physician who recommended a mammogram and ultrasound. Jane had breast cancer.

Judy was nearing her 35th birthday. She was excited. Her husband was going to take her to Colorado for an exciting week of rock climbing, river rafting, and fishing. Then, she was sad. She wanted romantic walks in the foothills, expensive dinners with champagne and a night in the honeymoon suite. Men will just never learn.

 The Mission: Cure Breast Cancer

We have come so far and we are so close to the dream of a breast cancer free world. We discovered the estrogen receptor and created tamoxifen to shut it down. We discovered the Her2 receptor (the most deadly of breast cancers) and created Herceptin to shut it down. We can now kill most breast cancers and stop many of them in their tracks.  The vast majority of breast cancers can now be fended off for a long time, giving women the opportunities to experience life with their families. Mothers now have the chance to watch their daughters grow up and become mothers themselves.

Breast Cancer, Fertility, and the Young WomanShortly after they celebrated their third year anniversary, Mary Jane and her husband, Alan, made plans to start a family. After a year of trying to conceive, Mary Jane made an appointment with her gynecologist to make sure everything was in working order before she and her husband tried again the next month. During her examination, Mary Jane’s doctor noticed a mass in her breast and scheduled an ultrasound directed biopsy. The lab results revealed cancer. Mary Jane, only 34 years old, was shocked. How could this happen to her at such a young age? What would her husband think? Would they even be able to have children now? Mary Jane was heartbroken.
