Touched by an Angel

Thank You

Angels do exist. I encounter their presence often. Angels are with me in the Operating Theater, looking over my shoulder, guiding my hand, relaxing my patient as we remove the tumor. Angels are with me in the office, focusing my thoughts and comforting you as we sketch out a plan to save you from cancer. Angels are with me when I study and read my journals, opening my mind to safer and more effective ways to get rid of breast cancer.

Chemotherapy Before Surgery? But I Want My Cancer Gone! Part I

Breast cancer belongs in the garbage can. Period.
Breast cancer needs to be cut out and thrown away. Done. The end.

If only it were that simple. Many surgeons will tell you that it is that simple. Just cut out the tumor and be done with it. But breast cancer is a very complex disease that requires a mosaic of treatments from a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the destruction of breast cancer.

I have breast cancer. What about my ovaries?

child-1245893_1920Jane is a 36-year-old mother of three just trying to make it through the day. She has children in three different schools, and the constant driving was taking a toll on her. One day, while putting on her seat belt, her left breast hurt. She thought nothing of it as she drove around town from school to ballet to soccer and to the grocery store. Then, one morning, in the shower, she noticed a lump in her breast. No one in her family, not her mother, not her sisters, not her aunts, had breast cancer. Still, she was scared. She called her physician who recommended a mammogram and ultrasound. Jane had breast cancer.

Margulies deep breath willowSusan got that call. You know? The one from the doctor that says, “You have cancer.”

At first, your mind goes blank.

Then fear strikes as you think not of your health, but rather of your husband being the one to take care of your children. When the fear subsides, you think about you.

A diagnosis of breast cancer is devastating. Being told you have to have your breasts removed can be catastrophic.

Techniques in reconstruction have made tremendous strides and creating natural looking breasts is now possible. Silicone implants can take the shape and feel of your natural breasts.

The cancer is gone. Her surgery went well and she was at home recovering, drinking a cup of aromatic coffee while sitting in her favorite wicker chair amongst her treasured plants, beneath a canopy of leaves, basking in the sunlight of her special room.

I would like to end our talk with a story of angels, of faith and of love. It is my story. It begins with the love of my wife; it ends with her love and the strength, the support, and the life giving energy that she is to me.

My story begins with a spot – a spot on my shoulder. Each day I would look at this spot and then one day, it changed. I recall my wife telling me to wear sunblock on numerous occasions, but I am a doctor, so I could never get cancer.

Why I am a Breast Surgical Oncologist (part 2)

Posted by Dr. Aaron G. Margulies - July 5, 2013 - Breast Cancer Surgery

Medical school was a dream come true. I was learning all the secrets of the human body; how the brain fired neurons to make the muscles of the hand close so that I could hold my girlfriend’s hand; how my heart beat rapidly when she kissed me; how my lungs could inhale her sweet perfume; and how my brain imagined those sweet dreams of her. I studied the Krebs cycle, which turns food into energy, with oxygen playing a vital role in this dance. I read about our immune system killing infections, fighting cancer, and healing injury. I learned to cure disease.
